The ISSP evolved out of pre-existing general social surveys. Its origin was a bilateral collaboration between the respective national studies of National Opinion Research Center (NORC), University of Chicago and Zentrum fuer Umfragen, Methoden, und Analysen (ZUMA, now part of GESIS-Leibniz Institute of the Social Sciences), in Mannheim, Germany. Both institutes started to collaborate in 1982, devoting a small segment of their national surveys ALLBUS and GSS to a common set of questions.

IPUMS provides census and survey data from around the world integrated across time and space. IPUMS integration and documentation makes it easy to study change, conduct comparative research, merge information across data types, and analyze individuals within family and community contexts. Data and services available free of charge.

Log Into North Carolina (LINC) is an interactive data retrieval service containing historical information for over 900 data items and a variety of geographic areas within the state. Topics include population, labor force, education, transportation, revenue, agriculture, vital statistics, energy and utilities, and other topics for a variety of geographic areas within the state. Most data are available for the state and all 100 counties. Some items are available for municipalities. Others, especially census data, may be retrieved for tracts and townships.

The OECD Data Explorer is the organisation's data warehouse, providing access to all OECD statistical data. It is the entry point for figures on a wide range of statistical topics, covering OECD member countries and partner economies.

Pew Research Center makes the case-level microdata for much of its research available to the public for secondary analysis after a period of time. These datasets are listed below by collection date. The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program generates reliable statistics for use in law enforcement. It also provides information for students of criminal justice, researchers, the media, and the public. The program has been providing crime statistics since 1930.

The UCR Program includes data from more than 18,000 city, university and college, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies. Agencies participate voluntarily and submit their crime data either through a state UCR program or directly to the FBI's UCR Program.
