Career Training and Career Prep Resources

LinkedIn Learning and Universal Class provide training courses for skills you may need in future careers. These are valuable resources that are available to us through our partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Follow the instructions closely for account access. Remember to include the letter Q (for Queens) before your student ID number as your library card number.

Learning Express provides study guides for nursing exams and teaching exams.

Transparent Language provides tutorials and lessons in language learning.

Newspapers and Information Resources for Career Prep

The newspaper resources provide information on current events and career opportunities. The New York Times access provides you 24 hours access to the full New York Times. Social Explorer contains census data from across the US in almost all categories. Use this database to search particular industries or information about particular states or cities.

To gain access this content you will need to create an individual New York Times account:
- Enter your library card number ( q + Q-Card number).
- Click "Create Account" & register with your email address or click "log in here" if you already have created a NYT account.
- Click "Redeem" & "Get Started" to get 24 hours of continuous access.
- After 24 hours, you will need to redeem another pass by repeating these instructions for continued access.

Note: A limited number of offsite passes are available per day.

NYTimes.com is a multi-platform news tool that provides access to New York Times and International New York Times content, including breaking news, multimedia, reviews and opinion, blogs, videos and more. NYTimes is updated 24/7. Access includes all online content except for the crossword puzzle. Full access is provided for NYT articles published between 1851 thru 1922, and between 1981 through current day. Access to the years 1923-1980 is limited. [Provided by Charlotte Mecklenburg Library]

The Library has access to two Charlotte Observer databases, a current (1985-current) and historical (1892- 1985) which can be searched separately as well as together.

The historical access (1892-1985) will show the image of the newspaper, as they appeared in the paper, however, the current access (1985- current) will show the full text of the article, but no images. [Provided by Charlotte Mecklenburg Libray]
