Accessing Google Scholar Advanced Search

While it's not as robust as other research tools, Google Scholar does enable some advanced searching features.

To access these, click the menu icon at the top left:

Using Google Scholar Advanced Search

Google Scholar's Advanced Search enables you to build a limited search by specifying the following:

  • What terms are necessary
  • What should be an exact phrase
  • What terms are optional
  • What terms to exclude
  • Where search terms appear
  • Who authored the article
  • Where the article was published
  • When the article was published

However, you can also create a more refined advanced search by using Boolean operators as described in MIT Libraries' Boolean operators research guide.
