Medical Emergency

In the event of a medical issue in the library, it will be necessary to determine whether the issue qualifies as a minor injury or major medical emergency.

Minor Injuries include small cuts and scrapes, bruises, and extremely minor burns.

Major Medical Emergencies include pretty much anything else, such as fainting, seizures, broken bones, anaphylactic shock, major puncture wounds, major burns, concussion, heart attack, stroke, assault, choking, etc.

The boxes below detail what to do in the event of each occurrence.

Major Medical Emergency

In the event of a major medical emergency:

1) Immediately call 911, and do not leave the injured party/patient

2) Be precise in stating your location.

3) Do not hang up. Let emergency personnel end the conversation. They may ask questions or provide support until help arrives.

4) Send the nearest available person to await the arrival of the emergency vehicle and to direct medical personnel to the patient.

5) Report the major medical event to a librarian as soon as possible.

Minor Injuries

In the event a patron or coworker experiences a minor injury, a first aid kit is located in the staff breakroom in the cabinets above the sink. Bandages, gauze, ointment, and antiseptic wipes are available.

Please report the minor injury to the Access Services Librarian (or another librarian if they are not available) as soon as possible.
