Student Employee Training

The purpose of this guide is to inform student workers of their duties and responsibilities as library assistants

Navigating the Website & Catalog

Sometimes a patron may need assistance locating an item either on our website (like a form or libguide) or through our online catalog.  As a Library Assistant you should be prepared to help them with these simple basic searches.  If a patron needs extensive research assistance, you should refer them to a librarian.

View the video tutorials below to learn how to navigate our website and online catalog.

Off Campus Database Access

We regularly get chats, emails, and phone calls, asking us how students can use our ebooks and databases while off-campus.

Patrons can access electronic library resources from off campus. To do this, they should visit the databases list. When prompted for login information, the patron should enter in their Queens' username and password.

Sometimes it also helps to have them try using a different internet browser (for example, switch from Firefox to Chrome).

If the patron is still having trouble or cannot remember their password, direct them to contact the ITS Help Desk at 704-337-2323 or helpdesk@queens.edu.

Tips for Helping Students with Research

1. Begin a search at the OneSearch bar for articles, e-books, and books.

2. You can search by topic, title of an article, or author to get results.

3. Assist students by sharing a research guide for their particular subject or class. This guide will have helpful instructions and links.

4. Remember to have students save or send the permalink or hyperlink to themselves to save the item from the library databases.

5. Remember that we have interlibrary loan to assist students with articles and books that we do not have immediate access to.
