A day in the life of a student library assistant depends on their scheduled shift for that day.  Most of the time, a student library assistant does not work more than 2-6 hours at a time, though there are exceptions.

Once you arrive for your shift, the first thing you will do is check in at the front desk to relieve whoever you may be replacing.  (The library usually only has two students working per hour).  Put your stuff down there and sign in using the white three ring binder located at the desk. Be sure you sign in on the right day/date. Then, go and let the Access Services Librarian ( or if they are not available one of the other librarians) know that you have arrived for your shift.

Your main job is to staff the front desk. This includes checking the Everett Library Email account, monitoring our online chat, answering phone calls, and checking books in and out to patrons. Often patrons will also need your assistance with printing, scanning, and copying. These duties will occupy most of your allotted shift. If questions or issues arise beyond these duties (such as Inter-Library loan questions, research questions, technological issues, or laptop rental queries) please ask a librarian for assistance.

When your shift is over, be sure to let the Access Services Librarian know that you are leaving and whether or not your replacement has shown up yet.
