Service Alert
There is a red flashlight at the front desk (behind the monitor) and there is a blue one (as well as more batteries) in the staff break room in the drawer under the microwave.
If the power goes out during the day, it may be possible to continue limited library operations, such as reading and studying. In this case, library staff will make a decision about whether to evacuate and/or close the building. However, if the power goes out during the evening, it will be necessary to evacuate the building to maintain a safe environment.
Power outages should be reported to a supervisor, who will then relay the information to Campus Services and Campus Police.
A staff member will be sent to determine if anyone has been stranded in the elevator.
Staff members should also do a search of the building to ensure that all patrons have been evacuated or led to well-lit areas.
If it becomes necessary to evacuate the building, follow the procedures below:
1) Utilize flashlights (either on your phone or one of the flashlights at the front desk or in the staff room).
2) Staff members and student workers should walk the building and alert patrons to the evacuation. Offer to assist them to the exit/s.
3) Emergency exits are located in the following places: 1st Floor - lobby entrance/exit; 2nd Floor - Mezzanine main staircase to lobby entrance/exit; Basement Floor - north west stairway emergency exit, southwest hallway emergency exit, and south hallway emergency exit.
4) The lobby entrance sliding doors may become inoperable during a power failure, in which case it will be necessary to open/close them manually.
5) Staff members will help disabled patrons leave the building safely.
6) Be sure to turn off any appliances and lights (as they will begin operating again once power returns) and lock up the building.
1) Any and all elevator failures should be reported to Campus Services (call 2201) who will communicate the problem to the elevator repair service.
2) An "Out of Order" sign should be placed on the elevator doors.
3) Reassure anyone trapped inside that help is on the way.
4) While elevators are inoperable, it may be necessary to provide additional assistance to any handicapped patrons.
5) When elevator service is restored, remember to remove "Out of Order" signs.
